Hey there,

Most small business ads fail for one boring reason: they’re vague. “Quality service, great prices, call today” says nothing, so it sells nothing — and you’ve paid for every set of eyes that scrolled right past it.

With the holiday ramp weeks away, this is the moment to fix that. AI can help you write ads that actually pull, target the right people, and test what works — the stuff that used to require an agency on retainer. You still bring the judgment and the budget discipline; AI brings the speed. Here’s how to make your ad dollars work harder this quarter.

START WITH THE CUSTOMER, NOT THE AD

Great ads come from knowing exactly who you’re talking to. Have AI sharpen that first: “I run a [type of business]. My best customers are [describe them]. Write a short profile of the person my holiday ads should target — what they want, what they’re worried about, and the words they’d use to describe their problem.” Now your ad talks to a real person instead of everyone (which is no one).

WRITE ADS THAT EARN THE CLICK

Feed that customer profile into your ad-writing prompt: “Write 5 versions of a Facebook/Instagram ad for my [offer], aimed at [that customer]. Each should lead with a different hook — a problem, a benefit, a question, a limited-time angle, and a local angle. Keep them short, specific, and end with a clear call to action.”

Five angles in seconds. Pick the two or three that feel truest to your business — you’ll test them against each other, not guess.

DON’T FORGET GOOGLE (WHERE PEOPLE ARE READY TO BUY)

Social ads catch attention; search ads catch intent. Someone typing “emergency plumber near me” or “custom cakes [your town]” is ready to spend now. Have AI draft those too: “Write 5 Google search ad headlines and 2 descriptions for my [business] targeting people searching for [what they’d type]. Make them specific and benefit-focused.” These often deliver the fastest return for a small budget.

TEST SMALL, THEN DOUBLE DOWN

This is where most owners waste money — they bet it all on one ad and one guess. Don’t. Run two or three versions with a small daily budget for a week. Let the numbers, not your gut, tell you which hook wins. Then put your money behind the winner. AI makes producing the variations free, so there’s no excuse not to test.

Ask it to help you read the results: “Here are the results from my three ads: [paste clicks, spend, sales]. Which is performing best, and what should I change to improve the others?”

THE GUARDRAILS

Never promise what you can’t deliver. AI will happily write “best in town, guaranteed.” Keep your claims true — a great ad that oversells just buys you refunds and bad reviews.

Set a budget cap and watch it. AI writes the ads; it doesn’t manage your spend. Start small, check daily for the first week, and never let a platform auto-scale you past your comfort zone.

Match the ad to the landing spot. If your ad promises a holiday bundle, the link had better go straight to that bundle. Mismatches burn your money at the last step.

YOUR ACTION PLAN THIS WEEK

Write your customer profile with the first prompt, then generate five ad versions for your top Q4 offer. Pick three, run them on a small budget, and let the results pick your winner before the holiday rush hits full force.

Know an owner about to throw money at holiday ads on a hope and a prayer? Forward them this first. A few good prompts could be the difference between a profitable December and a painful one.
