Hey there,

Let’s talk about something that costs a lot of small business owners real money: paying for AI tools they don’t need to pay for.

I’ve spent the last few weeks testing every free tier I could get my hands on. Here’s the honest breakdown of what’s worth $0, what’s worth upgrading, and what’s a waste of money.

THE FREE TIERS THAT ACTUALLY DELIVER

ChatGPT Free still gives you access to GPT-5.3 — the same flagship model paid users get. You can upload files, analyze data, and generate images. The catch? You’re capped at roughly 10 messages every five hours before it drops you to a lighter model. And as of February 2026, there are now ads on the free tier.

Google Gemini is baked into every paid Google Workspace plan at no extra cost. If you’re already paying for Google Workspace (and most businesses are), you’ve got AI in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The Business Starter plan gives you about 5 Gemini prompts per day. Business Standard and above gives you full access across all apps.

Claude Free gives you web, mobile, and desktop access with text, image, and code generation plus web search. Daily usage limits apply, but for quick tasks it’s solid.

WHEN FREE ISN’T ENOUGH

Here’s the honest truth: free tiers work great for occasional use. If you’re using AI a few times a day for quick drafts or brainstorming, don’t pay a cent.

But if you’re running a business and using AI daily, the limits will slow you down. Here’s where upgrading actually makes sense:

ChatGPT Plus ($20 USD/month) — Removes ads, bumps your message limit to 400-2,000 per five hours, and unlocks Deep Research, Agent Mode, and Sora for video. If you’re creating content or doing research daily, this pays for itself.

Claude Pro ($20 USD/month) — Higher usage limits and priority access. Worth it if you’re writing long-form content or doing complex analysis regularly.

Google Workspace Business Standard — If you’re already on Starter, upgrading gets you full Gemini across all Google apps. Check what you’re currently paying — you might already have it.
